Professional Headshots for MPs and Candidates
Professional Headshots for MPs and Candidates are about far more than a sharp suit and good lighting. They are about trust, credibility, and that crucial first impression that voters form in seconds.
In fact, research suggests that around 3% of swinging voters, in the absence of knowing any of the candidates or having a strong party preference, will vote for the person whose photo they like the best. That might sound small, but in marginal seats, 3% can be the difference between winning and losing.
That is why Professional Headshots for MPs and Candidates must strike the right balance. They need to look confident, capable, approachable and trustworthy, without ever feeling stiff, overly staged, or artificial.
Photographing the Victorian Nationals at Parliament House
Recently, I had the opportunity to photograph the Victorian National Party parliamentary team on location at Victorian Parliament House.
I have been photographing politicians for over 20 years, working with members from the Liberal Party, the Labor Party, and several minor parties. That experience makes a huge difference in high-pressure environments where MPs juggle parliamentary duties, meetings, media obligations, and travel.
This shoot was a great example of how preparation, efficiency, and calm direction can produce outstanding results, even under tight time constraints.
Logistics and Planning: The Hidden Key to a Smooth Shoot
One of the most important parts of any political shoot happens well before the first photo is taken.
Because there is no parking on the Parliament House grounds for outside providers, we coordinated logistics in advance to ensure equipment could be moved in and out efficiently. Shoots like this rely on planning, timing, and knowing exactly what is needed.
My assistant and I arrived at 9:15am, with all gear prepared, backup cameras on hand, and laptops ready. We were fully set up and ready for shooting at 10:00am sharp.
The entire session took under three hours, including time to create both formal and casual looks for each MP.
Fast Sessions, High Standards
Each MP was scheduled for their own 20-minute session, carefully timed around voting schedules and meetings.
Formal and Casual Looks in One Session
In each 20-minute window, we captured both formal portraits for official use, media releases and parliamentary materials and casual and approachable portraits for social media, newsletters and campaign content. This is essential because modern politicians need a library of imagery that can work across platforms. A single headshot is no longer enough.
Andrew Campbell’s Approach Behind the Camera
Throughout the session, I directed, prompted and posed each MP naturally, ensuring posture, expression and body language looked confident but relaxed. The goal is always the same: images that feel genuine and human, and most importantly, look trustworthy! Everyone was delighted with their new images, and the energy throughout the session remained upbeat and professional.
Why Professional Political Headshots Matter (and the Results)
This session included finished portraits (along with behind-the-scenes photos of me directing and engaging with MPs, thanks @ Anthony McKee) for the following Victorian Nationals members:
Party Leader
- Danny O’Brien MP – Member for Gippsland South
Victorian Nationals MPs
- Emma Kealy MP – Deputy leader, Member for Lowan
- Tim McCurdy MP – Member for Murray Plains
- Martin Cameron MP – Member for Eastern Victoria Region
- Annabelle Cleeland MP – Member for Euroa
- Jade Benham MP – Member for Mildura
- Gaelle Broad MP – Member for Northern Victoria Region
Whether it is a Party Leader, a sitting MP, or a new candidate entering the race, strong photography is not optional. In modern campaigning, your image is often the first introduction a voter gets, and those images must communicate credibility, warmth, and trustworthiness.
After final selections were made, each portrait underwent minor professional retouching, including removing obvious blemishes, straightening and reducing clothing wrinkles, ensuring every image looked polished but still realistic.
This Parliament House shoot is a great example of what can be achieved with careful planning, efficient scheduling, and confident direction, even under time pressure. Professional Headshots for MPs and Candidates are best taken by experienced professionals who take the time to get everything right!
